Staying in Canberra and perusing some routes to ride I came across this gem which is a Steph Skinner route who is a bit of a legend around these parts.
You won’t see as much as a single car cruising through the pine plantations of the Kowen Forest zagging up and down with plenty of elevated views of surrounding areas.
You’ll also ride down Mill Post Rd which is a kind of really out of the way community hidden in the middle of the forest. Quite surreal.
Bungendore is a very cute little town out the back of Canberra with shops and cafes.
The route follows much of the same ground back but its worth it for the views and fast flowing gravel.
– This ride starts at the entrance gates to Kowen Forest and is easily accessible from anywhere in Canberra
– The one and only lunch stop is in Bungendore at the 26km mark of the ride where there is a bakery and cafes
– 69% of this route is gravel which is all mostly very smooth
– There are short stints on the freeway before and after Bungendore. There is quite a bit of traffic, however, there is a shoulder to ride on.
